Refrigerated Cargo Passenger Vessel s.s. Ruahine (11) was built by William Denny & Sons, Dumbarton in 1909. She was 10,832 Gross Registered Tons. 151.49 Meters Length Overall, Two propellers were driven by 2 Triple Expansion Steam engines of 3 cylinders. Giving 7,815 I.H.P. she had five forced draft Howden Boilers. She had a service speed of 14.5 knots and carried 1,828 tons of coal. She had 13,619.3 Cubic Meters of cargo space of which 8,243.6 cubic meters were insulated. She had space for 56 Ist Class Passengers, 88 2nd Class Passengers, 126 3rd Class Passengers and 250 Emigrants
Ruahine was built with Deck Cranes at No. 3 hatch. These were replaced by derrick Posts in 1926.
1912 March, Attempted to tow P & Os Oceana into shallow water after her collision with the German Laeisz sailing ship Pisagua near Beachy Head. The Railway steamer Sussex took off all but those struggling to save the ship. Taken in tow by the tug Albert, the Ruahine was able to continue on her voyage. The Oceana sank off Eastbourne.
1917 March Missed by a torpedo 170 miles South West of Fastnet.
1920 During her post war re-fit she was converted to fuel oil.
1926 Refitted passenger accommodation to 220 Tourist class passengers only.
1938 Used as a refrigerated cargo ship only as refurbishing her passenger accommodation to contemporary standards was cost prohibitive, because of her age.

1949 January, Sold to Fratelli Grimaldi at the termination of her 92nd voyage for N.Z.S.Co., renamed
and was extensively remodeled and modernized. Placed on the Italy – South America emigrant service with Naples as her home port.
1957 Broken up at Savona. One man joined her as a boy and served until she was sold, 40 years in the same ship!
